SMB Male coaxial cable connector

C&T RF Antennas Inc's SMB connectors are a subminiature connector series designed for applications operating to 4 GHz and are available in 50 and 75 Ohm versions. This series includes a snap-on interface, controlled by industry standard specifications and is easy to connect and disconnect. Mechanical stability provided by the SMB interface and its relatively small size allows uses in applications where space is limited.

Subminiature interconnects featuring snap-on coupling and a space-saving alternative to SMA.

FEATURES

Performance up to 4 GHz

Simple snap-on coupling

RG 174, RG 316 or RG 178 cable terminations

Right-angle through-hole jack

Non-magnetic options available for medical and aerospace applications

Custom SMB jack connector crimped to a 5 mm coaxial cable

Type:      RF coaxial connector for Cable     Coaxial

Pass band Typically 0–4 GHz

SMB (SubMiniature version B) connectors are coaxial RF connectors developed in the 1960s. SMB connectors are smaller than SMA connectors.

They feature a snap-on coupling and are available in either 50 Ω or 75 Ω impedance. They offer excellent electrical performance from DC to 4 GHz.

An SMB jack has a male center pin, while an SMB plug has a female basket.

Connectors are available for two SMB cable sizes:

Cable 2.6/50+75 S (3 mm outer / 1.7 mm inner diameter) and

Cable 2/50 S (2.2 mm outer / 1 mm inner diameter)

Item NO.: CTRF-CN-SMB-Male

C&T RF SMB CONNECTOR SERIES

The SMB connector is used in applications where a quick mating sub-miniature RF connector is required for RF frequencies up to frequencies of a few GHz.

The SMB connector derives its name as it is termed a Sub-Miniature version B connector. It was developed as a result of the need for a connector that was able to connect and disconnect swiftly. It does not require nuts to be tightened when two connectors are mated. Instead, the connectors are brought together and they snap fit together. Additionally, the connector utilizes an inner contact and overlapping dielectric insulator structures to ensure good connectivity and a constant impedance.

The SMB connector is not as robust as the SMA connector, and although they perform well under moderate levels of vibration, they are not suitable for harsh environmental conditions where the levels of vibration rise.

SMB connector impedance

The SMB connector is specified in two impedances:

50Ω:   The 50Ω version of the SMB connector is possibly more widely used. The connectors are often specified up to 4 GHz.

75Ω:   The 75Ω version of the SMB connector is often only specified to a maximum frequency of 2 GHz, although 4 GHz versions are available. To achieve the different impedance the ratio of the inner to outer diameters is different

The connectors are available in variants for the different types of thin coax available. The cable entry areas need to be able to accurately accommodate the coax cable.

SMB applications

SMB coaxial connectors are not as widely used as their SMA counterparts. They are used for inter-board or assembly connections within the equipment, although they are not widely used for purchased microwave assemblies in view of their inferior performance.

Applications for SMB connectors can include:

Base Stations

Antennas

Radio Boards

PC/LAN

GPS

Although the SMB connector is not as widely used as its SMA cousin, large quantities are nevertheless used. The connector is much easier to connect and this can be a distinct advantage in applications where its performance is sufficiently good. As a result, the SMB connector is a very successful design and used for many applications.

SMB connectors from C&T RF Antennas Inc are part of the very extensive selection of radio frequency interconnect components. C&T RF Antennas Inc's SMB connectors include jack and plug genders in 50 Ohm impedance levels. Our SMB connectors are available in standard polarity designs with bulkhead and mountless types.

The SMB connector product line for coax and PCB are available with various crimp/solder, solder, and solder/solder attachment methods. SMB connector compatible cable types include RG174, RG316, and RG405.
